The Asian Council of Science Editors (ACSE) is pleased to announce the return of Peer Review Week, an annual event that unites researchers, publishers, editors, and other key stakeholders in celebrating the critical role of peer review. This year, Peer Review Week will take place from September 23 to 27, 2024, with a focus on the timely theme, "Innovation and Technology in Peer Review."

A Global Focus on Innovation and Technology

Peer Review Week 2024 will explore the intersection of peer review and technological advancement, highlighting how innovations are shaping the future of scholarly communication. Chosen through a global poll of 494 participants, this theme reflects growing trends in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and other digital tools to enhance peer review processes. More than 35 organizations from around the world will take part, and there is still time for additional participation.

As the publishing ecosystem evolves, the need for transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity in peer review grows. AI tools are being used to streamline administrative tasks, enabling reviewers to focus on substantive evaluations. This shift prompts key questions: How can AI enhance human expertise? Can these innovations expand reviewer diversity? And can technology address ongoing research integrity challenges?

The Importance of Global Collaboration

The academic community today faces increasingly complex challenges that require interdisciplinary and global cooperation. The Peer Review Week steering committee highlights that achieving global goals, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, will necessitate new forms of collaboration, where technology serves as a bridge between diverse fields and ideas. Peer review is central to this exchange, ensuring that research maintains its rigor and quality. In this context, technology offers an opportunity to enhance the peer review process, facilitating more dynamic and collaborative approaches to evaluation.

Get Involved in Peer Review Week 2024

ACSE urges its members and the scholarly community to engage in Peer Review Week 2024, featuring events such as webinars, podcasts, and blog posts focused on innovation in peer review. Last year's event saw over 6,000 participants and nearly 100 activities, with this year expected to be similarly dynamic.
