Clarivate Unveils 2024 Journal Citation Reports: A New Era for Academic Journals

By   Jean Ashley Jun 26, 2024 3183 7

Clarivate a global leader in transformative intelligence, has just rolled out the 2024 edition of the Journal Citation Reports™ (JCR™), marking a significant evolution in how the academic world evaluates scholarly journals. This year’s updates promise to enhance how educational institutions, researchers, and publishers gauge the influence and trustworthiness of journals worldwide.

In a move designed to streamline and simplify journal evaluations, the 2024 JCR introduces unified rankings across subject categories. Gone are the days of separate rankings for journals listed in multiple editions. For instance, a psychiatry journal previously listed separately in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)™ and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)™ will now enjoy a singular, unified ranking. This change aims to provide a clearer, more straightforward understanding of a journal's standing within its field.

This year’s JCR also integrates journals from the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) into the unified category rankings. This inclusion underscores Clarivate’s commitment to recognizing a broader spectrum of high-quality, trustworthy journals, including those that are newer or have a regional focus.

The 2024 JCR has been upgraded to offer a more user-friendly and comprehensive experience. Key highlights for the 2024 release:

  • The update features the inclusion of journals from the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) within the new unified category rankings.
  • Coverage of over 21,800 journals, with about 5,800 being fully open access.
  • Scholarly journals from 113 countries across 254 categories are represented.
  • The report includes 14,090 science journals, 7,321 social science journals, and 3,304 arts & humanities journals.
  • Notably, 544 journals receive a Journal Impact Factor™ (JIF™) for the first time, reflecting the expanding reach and inclusivity of the JCR.

Dr. Nandita Quaderi, Senior Vice President & Editor-in-Chief, Web of Science, Clarivate, highlighted the importance of these updates: “The creation of unified rankings is part of a series of policy changes we have made to support research integrity and help level the global playing field by making the JIF a marker of trust as well as scholarly impact.”

Emmanuel Thiveaud, Senior Vice President, Research and Analytics, Academia & Government at Clarivate, emphasized the enduring value of the JCR: “For nearly half a century, the global research community has relied on the annual Journal Citation Reports to confidently identify leading and trusted journals in their fields. This year’s enhancements are designed to address the evolving needs of our customers.”

The 2024 Journal Citation Reports represent a significant step forward in journal evaluation, ensuring a more inclusive and equitable recognition of scholarly work. Researchers and institutions now have an even more robust tool to navigate the complex landscape of academic publishing.
